Updated Mill Valley Craftsman with a History

$2,645,000 | 175 Marguerite Ave , Mill Valley , Ca 94941

Charm and Character abounds updated Craftsman Style residence is ideally situated above vibrant downtown Mill Valley with its quaint shops, upscale markets, Sequoia Theater, restaurants and cafés, nestled on a sun-bathed lot in desirable Middle Ridge location, known for its sheltered climate and incredible views. This updated four-bedroom, four-bathroom home with vintage details has a southern exposure, San Francisco skyline and bay views in a picturesque, tranquil wooded setting. The open and flexible floor plan allows for seamless indoor and outdoor flow onto spacious and private entertaining and view decks. Originally built in 1916 by the family of Lillian Hodghead, co-founder of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, this home has been thoughtfully remodeled and expanded throughout the years blending old world charm with modern amenities.

The perfectly restored 100-year-old "Redwood Room” is built entirely of first growth, clear heart redwood, has a restored klinker brick fireplace and original built-in window seat and shelving. The main living area features a wall of windows, French doors, vaulted ceilings, skylights and inlaid hardwood floors. The updated chef’s kitchen, open to the living areas is finished with Brazilian soapstone and butcher-block counters, high-end appliances as well as a wine/cocktail bar and study area. The custom cabinetry is equipped with storage details, accommodating a well-organized and efficient used of space. The appliances include a Miele convection oven, Miele dishwasher, Sub-Zero refrigerator and Shaw farmhouse sink. A Viking six- burner range is set into an expansive two-tiered butcher block and walnut island designed for dining. A large butler's pantry and laundry area adjoins the kitchen and a full bathroom is adjacent to the main floor living areas.

The upper level has two spacious bedrooms that view out onto stone lined paths and garden areas with ample closets and a full Jack and Jill custom tiled bathroom.

The lower level opens onto a private patio and sun garden and includes a generous master-suite with 2 walk-in cedar lined closets and updated en- suite bath. There is an additional versatile bedroom/ family room/ study and en-suite bath on the lower level. Both bedrooms on the lower level look out to garden areas.

The original house, was built in 1916 by Mr. Utsimatsu Tashiro, a local Japanese carpenter, for Dr. David Hodghead. Dr David was one of the founders of the San Francisco College of Medicine (now UC San Francisco), the father of Lillian Hodghead, co-founder of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. It is one of three identical houses that constituted the family compound. The house was occupied by the Hodghead family for many decades. The composer, Ernest Bloch, wrote his "America: An Epic Rhapsody for Orchestra" while a guest at the compound. The house was expanded and updated in 1958, in 1995 and 2011. The remodeling and expansions have not sacrificed any of the original character of the house, which retains a rustic feel but is clean and contemporary.

Set among redwood, oak and evergreen trees, with bay, valley, ridgeline and San Francisco skyline views the home is positioned on the hillside in such a way as to maximize privacy and is not visible from the street. The well laid out landscape includes stone lined paths, lush native foliage, a vegetable garden, fruit trees, herbs and private garden of terraces below the house.

An abundance of wildlife, hiking and biking trails of Mt. Tamalpais are steps away. The house is less than a mile from the shops and restaurants of downtown Mill Valley and in the award-winning Mill Valley school district. The easy commute to San Francisco and north bay is approx. three miles from Highway 101, and approx. eleven miles from the Golden Gate Bridge.
